GALAXIES

Galaxies are vast collections of millions, often billions stars. Given such a wide range of masses, it is not surprising that galaxies appear in an astonishing variety. The most spectacular are the gas-rich spirals such as NGC 2997, illustrated alongside. Galaxies like this resemble our own Milky Way. Among the most massive galaxies are the featureless giant ellipticals such as M87 (see AAT 60) while some lightweights are seen as companions to other, more massive galaxies such as M100 (AAT 59). The Milky way itself has diminutive companions, the Magellanic Clouds, illustrated here as UKS 14 and UKS 17.
